The Wagner Tuning Intercooler Kit is a direct upgrade for BMW models running the S55B30 3.0-litre twin-turbo engine, including the M2 Competition, M2 CS, M3 (F80) and M4 (F82/F83). It replaces the standard front-mounted intercooler with a much larger, more efficient unit, helping the engine run cooler under sustained load and deliver more consistent power.

An intercooler’s job is to cool the compressed air coming from the turbochargers before it enters the engine. Cooler air is denser, which means more oxygen, better combustion and more reliable power. On the S55, the factory intercooler is a known weak point once you start driving hard or running tuned software, with intake temperatures climbing quickly and the ECU pulling timing to protect the engine. A larger intercooler keeps temperatures stable, so the engine can keep making its full power for longer.

Core design and construction

Wagner Tuning has developed a high-performance bar-and-plate core that is significantly larger than the OEM unit. The internal-to-external fin ratio has been tuned for maximum heat transfer with minimal pressure drop, so the engine still gets a strong, fast-responding flow of air to the turbos.

The cast aluminium end tanks were designed in CAD and refined using CFD (computational fluid dynamics) simulations, basically computer modelling of airflow, to keep back pressure low and air distribution even across the core. The complete intercooler is finished with a thermally conductive anti-corrosion coating, which protects the aluminium without harming heat transfer.
